It pays to complain ... politely.

The truck had to go in for an oil change. I stoppped in last week to make an appointment at the dealership for the perks of shuttle service, and proximity to the Job. I explain that I need a lift to work, and yes, please, pickup service.

I got there this morning almost on time and had to wait while the service person took care of the person there ahead of me. She took my info, as per the appointment, and asked me if I wanted to wait for the oil change or was someone picking me up. I explained that I needed a lift to work, and explained where it was. She thought I wanted to wait or someone would pick me up.

So I went out to wait. At 9 I called the boss and told him I'd be running late (I was supposed to be at work a half hour earlier. About 5 minutes later, they scrounged up someone to give me a lift.

Work was its ... usual self ...

Then I got a call from the dealership after lunch, the truck was ready, would I be coming in to get it? I explained, again about needing a lift, and thinking to myself "okay ... that's strike 2 ... " (I have been using the dealership for over 2 years, and they've only screwed up twice, that's not too bad). I was trying to give them 3 strikes, maybe 4, because they've otherwise given me good service, with warning in the event the truck isn't ready, with no "attitude from hell" even when I've had one.

The service person said she'd see what I could do, and I gave my cel phone number as the contact method of choice. A while later I got a call from a driver. I gave him directions, wondering, by this point, about the usual driver. He's a really nice older man, a real sweetheart. I hoped he was doing well, wasn't sick, stolen or strayed.

The driver called me from the front of building, and I headed out to get driven back to get my truck. We talked, I vented a bit about the relatively small things that annoyed me about having to wait, I found out that the regular driver was doing something for the owner of the dealership, everytime he started talking about retiring, the owner sweet talked him out of it. The $50+ specially ordered screw (54.95, plus tax if I recalled correctly). I did praise the dealership's attitude and the people. I thanked him for driving me, and explained that I didn't want to have someone stuck staying late to get me from point A to point B, and that I was holding off on a minor part replacement.

I headed off to pay for the oil change. The driver followed me, and refused to let me pay for the oil change. It turned out he owned the dealership, and wanted to pay me back for being a pleasant customer/keep me from being "cranky customer".

I thanked him, shook his hand, and went to snag the truck, because there were about 3 hours left of work.
